Power Production

Power production is a dynamic industry that is growing and changing to meet the demands of today's consumers. Depending on the resources available in a region, there are many ways in which power is generated in Canada. In Western Canada, electricity is produced primarily from steam engines powered by coal or by combustion turbines fuelled by natural gas. In Eastern Canada, the primary sources of power production are hydro or nuclear-based.

As the demands for electricity increase and the need for efficiency becomes more apparent, many new technologies are being developed and other methods explored. Some althernative forms of energy production include bioenergy, geothermal, solar, wind, tidal and wave power.
